The story

Two boys were fishing in canoe and threw their lines and hooks into the water. They didn't know they were fishing near the home of the god of the ocean Ruahatu. The fishing hook hit Ruahatu on the head and he came up to punish the boys.

He told them that he would flood the island of Raiatea where they live, but he found out that their princess was Airaro, who he was in love with. So he told them that anyone who took refuge on the island of To'a Marama would be spared.

The island was flooded and the birds were called up into the sky, but everyone who got to To'a Marama was saved.

Lyrics

Ara'ara ta'u mata
I ni'a i te tai tapu
Na to'a marama vau
He'ehe'e o te miti

Iriti oe, iriti oe
Airaro vahine i te piri
A Ruahatu te fatu moana
Tu'u mai te manu, tu'u mai te manu
E manu e
Fa'ara te fenua aia'a

To firi oe, to firi oe
Airaro vahine te piri
To Ruahato te fatu o te tai
Tu'u mai te moe, tu'u mai te moe moemoe
Moemoe e
I ni'a ia to'a Marama

Translation

My eyes open
On the forbidden sea
To'a Marama
the sea withdraws

Cancel, cancel
Oh Airaro the spell
of Ruahatu the god of the ocean
That a bird comes
A bird
to wake up the ancestral land

Braid, braid the spell
Oh Airaro the spell
Ruahatu the lord of the sea

Sleep curse
Falling asleep
on To'a Marama
